Key Club – 10/10/2019 Meeting

There was an Ames High School Key Club meeting today, Thursday, October 10th. All officers, the two advisors, and about 35 students were present. Key Club highway clean up will be October 19th. Dues of six dollars per member were collected from students who want to be official members.  As in years past, the Ames Town & Country Kiwanis Club will pick up the other $7 of the $13 per member dues.  We want to get our early bird patch this year.  Trunk-or-Treat at Ames High’s parking lot was discussed. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to eliminate maternal and neo-natal tetanus was discussed; it will be held on October 31st from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. Reiman Gardens pumpkin stenciling and carving is another activity that Key Club will participate in this week. Key Leader information (November 8-10 in Louisville, NE) was shared with the group.

Key Club – 10/23/2018 Meeting

Friends of the Ames High School Key Club –
Here are this week’s meeting notes along with a note sent by Key Club Secretary Arunadee Fernando to AHS Key Club members about today’s trunk-or-treat event in the Ames High School Parking Lot this evening from 4:00 until 6:00 PM:

Hi everyone!

This is just a reminder that tomorrow Thursday, October 25 is Trunk or Treat! Yay! It will be from 4-6 and we will be meeting in the AHS back parking lot. Our theme is Hawaiian/Beach. Feel free to dress up! If you would like to help us decorate our trunk, meet us in Mrs. Gillette’s room(room 111) right after school. Also, if you have any hawiiany/beachy things you think we could use to decorate with, you are welcome to bring it!
Hope to see you guys at Trunk or Treat!!
-Arunadee

All five officers were present, along with Faculty Advisor Gillette and Kiwanis Advisor Griffith.  T&C Kiwanis had an interclub with Dan Franklin, Mary Ann Lundy, and Ray Callahan in attendance.

In excess of 50 students were present for the meeting.  We have 63 official Key Club members this year.  This is a substantial increase from the 32 official members last year.

Volunteers helped stencil and carve over 600 pumpkins for Reiman Gardens on October 17th and 18th.  Pictures shared by one of my friends on Facebook are impressive!  The Key Club had many volunteers.

Three students will attend Key Leader near Ogden from November 9th through November 11th.  They are Gabe LaFleur, Connor Schroeder, and Olivia Wiench.

Service opportunities were described, including Trunk-or-Treat at Ames High School on Thursday, October 25th from 4-6 pm and Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF on Halloween (Wednesday, October 31 from 5:15 until 8:00 pm).  We also had 6 members indicate that they would help rake leaves for Ames Kiwanis Club past president Cynthia Gaunt at her house on Saturday, October 27th from 1-3 pm.

The next Key Club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 13th, at 1:00 PM in the Multi-purpose room at Ames High School.

Thanks for supporting Key Club!

A number of Ames High School Key Club students volunteered at the Sawyer Elementary School Carnival.  I don’t have exact numbers, but close to 15 Key Club members assisted at the popcorn machine and helped run various games on Friday evening, September 28th.  Both Faculty Advisor Gillette and Kiwanis Advisor Griffith attended the event, and adults in attendance were very complimentary of the Key Club volunteers and their service efforts.

Key Club – 09/25/2018 Meeting

All five officers were present, along with Faculty Advisor Gillette and Kiwanis Advisor Griffith.  T&C Kiwanis had an interclub with Dan Franklin, Mary Ann Lundy, and Ray Callahan in attendance.

75 students attended the meeting.  Advisor Griffith provided the treasurer with $50 in ones and fives to help make change while collecting dues.  Approximately 30 students paid their dues.  The start-up money of $50 was returned to Advisor Griffith.  Next week we will wrap up our dues collection and determine the number of official Key Club members.

Officers noted that benefits of becoming an official Key Club member by paying dues include Scholarship Eligibility, Voting Rights, and Support of a Worthwhile Organization.  It was noted that Ames Town & Country Kiwanis Club was paying the other $7 for each member for a total of $13 per student.

Abby Robinder talked about volunteering at the Octagon Art Festival last Sunday.  She said that she enjoyed the experience.

The Sawyer Elementary School Carnival to be held on Friday, September 28th from 4:30 – 9:00 PM was presented to students as another service opportunity.  Help is needed in the game rooms. There are other various volunteer positions.  Sign-ups were done via a link in the student email.

Advisor Griffith mentioned the opportunity to help the sponsoring Kiwanis Club with the North Highway 69 clean-up scheduled for Saturday, September 29th at 9:00 AM.  Students can join with T&C Kiwanians at Sleepy Hollow across from Ada Hayden Park.  Old tennis shoes and long pants are recommended.

The NE/IA District Key Club Fall Rally will be held on Sunday, September 30th at Adventureland.  Thirteen Ames High School students will represent our club.  Student cost is $14, with the Key Club funding the other $14 for a total cost of $28 per attendee.

Other upcoming service opportunities were discussed including the DOT Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup at 9 AM on October 6th.  As in prior years, we will meet in the Lowe’s parking lot close to Burgie’s.

Co-chairs were randomly chosen from those who expressed an interest.  They are listed below:

Highway Cleanup – Madeline Taylor and Gabe LeFleur
Emergency Residence Project – Abby Robinder and Ellie Nusbaum

Students were given instructions for logging their volunteer hours.  Arunadee sent out a student email on Sepember 25th with notes from the meeting and instructions to correctly log volunteer hours.
